June 2026 - Chinook along the islands/ peak halibut
June is one of the most exciting months of the year to fish around Tofino. The transition from spring to summer brings longer days, improving weather, and an abundance of bait that attracts Chinook salmon, halibut, lingcod, and rockfish to the productive waters off the west coast of Vancouver Island. While July and August tend to receive most of the attention, many experienced anglers consider June one of the best opportunities of the season thanks to excellent fishing, fewer boats on the water, and a wide variety of species available on any given day. June often provides the perfect balance between strong fishing and a more relaxed atmosphere on the water.Chinook salmon fishing continues to improve throughout the month as migrating fish begin moving past Tofino in greater numbers. Productive fishing can be found both along the surfline and around the many points, reefs, and current edges that make this coastline so unique. Areas such as Wilf Rock, Lennard Island, and Sydney Inlet typically hold fish throughout the month as Chinook feed heavily on herring, needlefish, and spawning squid. When salmon become focused on squid, some of the most exciting shallow-water fishing of the year can occur. Aggressive strikes, powerful runs, and fast-paced action are common when these fish move into protected bays and shoreline structure to feed. Squid-pattern hoochies, anchovies, and spoons are all effective presentations depending on conditions and bait concentrations.
Halibut fishing is also in excellent shape during June. Fish continue to feed actively on the offshore banks, humps, and ledges as they settle into their summer feeding patterns. With generally stable weather and consistent access to offshore grounds, June often produces some of the best halibut fishing of the season. Many anglers take advantage of the opportunity to combine salmon and halibut fishing on the same trip, spending part of the day trolling for Chinook before targeting halibut on deeper structure. The result is a true west coast multi-species experience and the possibility of bringing home a variety of premium seafood.
Lingcod and rockfish remain reliable throughout the month and provide excellent action when conditions allow. Reef edges, pinnacles, kelp-covered structure, and broken rocky bottom continue to produce quality fish. June is an especially good time to target bottom fish as fishing pressure remains relatively low compared to peak summer. These fisheries are well suited for anglers of all experience levels and can be a great addition to a day spent targeting salmon or halibut.
One of the defining features of June fishing is the amount of bait present throughout the region. Herring and needlefish remain abundant offshore while squid begin appearing in greater numbers in protected bays and nearshore waters. Wherever bait collects, salmon are rarely far behind. Finding concentrations of bait is often the key to locating productive fishing and can quickly turn a good day into an exceptional one.
Beyond the fishing itself, June offers some of the best overall conditions of the year to experience the west coast. Grey whales, humpbacks, sea otters, sea lions, and bald eagles are common sights throughout Clayoquot Sound and the offshore waters. Combined with long daylight hours and generally calm weather, June provides anglers with an outstanding opportunity to enjoy everything that makes fishing in Tofino special.
Whether your goal is a trophy Chinook salmon, a hard-fighting halibut, a mixed-species day on the water, or simply spending time exploring one of British Columbia’s most spectacular coastal environments, June consistently delivers some of the most rewarding fishing opportunities of the season.
