July Tofino Fishing Report

There’s something about a July morning in Tofino. The fog hangs low over Clayoquot Sound, the ocean is glassy, and before long the first rods are already bouncing. By the time most people are finishing breakfast, we’ve often got fresh salmon in the fish box and humpback whales surfacing in the distance.

July consistently delivers some of the most enjoyable fishing of the season, and it’s no surprise that many of our returning guests plan their annual trip around this month.

Chinook Salmon Fishing is in Full Swing

July is prime time for Chinook salmon around Tofino. Large schools of baitfish have settled into local waters, and mature Chinook are feeding aggressively. Whether we’re working the inshore reefs or heading offshore, this is one of the most productive months of the season.

Every day is a little different, but when the tides line up and the bait starts moving, the action can be fast. Watching a reel scream as a big Chinook takes off never gets old—whether it’s your very first salmon or you’ve been chasing them for years.

Excellent Halibut Fishing Continues

Halibut fishing remains a highlight throughout July. We’re targeting productive offshore structure where these powerful fish spend the summer feeding. Some days it’s steady action, while others require a little patience, but July consistently offers excellent opportunities to land quality halibut.

Lingcod and rockfish are often part of the day’s catch as well, making for an exciting mixed fishery and plenty of fresh seafood to take home.

Wildlife Encounters Every Trip

Fishing isn’t the only reason people love July on the water.

Humpback whales are feeding offshore, sea otters drift through the kelp beds, sea lions patrol the reefs, bald eagles soar overhead, and dolphins occasionally make an appearance. Even on days when the fish make us work a little harder, the wildlife rarely disappoints.

For families especially, these moments often become the stories everyone remembers long after the trip is over.
