March/April 2014Looks like we are in for another great spring in Tofino. Recent reports from the Columbia River forecast great Coho (Silver) returns and the best Chinook (King) Salmon run since record keeping began in 1938! Exciting prospects for us in Tofino as we typically see predominately Columbia River Chinook from March through to early July when Fraser River salmon become the dominant run. We have been enjoying fantastic prawning so far this winter/spring and look forward to many more loaded traps to come. Prawning can be mixed with salmon fishing in the calm waters inside Clayoquot Sound making it a great experience for the whole family to enjoy. Make sure you have a look at our 'Get on the Water' special running until the end of April. Tourism Tofino is offering Free Ferry passes for your return trip to the mainland! Click here for details.
As Offshore weather conditions continue to improve we will spend more time targeting Salmon and Halibut on the continental shelf off of Vancouver Island. Halibut season is open and we look forward to a slight increase in the size limits from the 2013 season beginning the 1st of April. The limit will remain one halibut per day with a max size of 133cm up from 126cm last year. For more info follow this link to the Department of Fisheries regulation update.
March and April is prime time to venture into the remote wilderness of Strathcona Provincial Park to spend the day drifting the river in pursuit of winter Steelhead and Cutthroat Trout. Follow this link to learn more about our river trip. Our 'get on the water' special makes this March/April a perfect time to head out on the river.
